Chapter Three: Jackson, Fall Guy

After a weekend together, the first free weekend for Rusty in a long time, Mike signed his life away and joined the residency team in emergency medicine. It was on the second day that a call came in from one of their “underground watchdogs” about Dr. Scranton’s next victim. Doug took Mike and Rusty aside and explained quietly that the victim was in a bad way but he knew nothing more.

“Where is he?” Mike wanted to know all about their impressive system.

“We have the men transferred from Scranton’s hospital to a neighboring state until they can be stabilized. Then they come here by air.”

“Wait a minute. Todd was not transferred.”

“No, he was not. His partner, JD, found us on the Internet. Fortunately, our watchdogs have gotten much better since then. One day, we will be able to intervene before Scranton gets to them.”

Mike wondered if that day would ever come. It seemed to him that there was always someone waiting in the wings to take the place of guys like Dr. Scranton. “Who is it, Doug? Is it another resident?”

“I don’t know, Mike. We don’t like to say much where it might be picked up by a satellite somewhere. It could be a student, resident, staff physician, or any other member in the community.” Doug put his arm around Mike. “No matter who it is, though, we can make them whole again. You have seen our place in the Flint Hills.”

Mike took a break and tried to calm his nerves. He tried to think of everyone he knew, but there were so many students and residents in the Alabama system. He had had half a bottle of cola when Rusty ran into the break room. “He’s here, Mike.”

Mike hurried to the assigned trauma bay where Doug was beginning to assess the patient. “The patient has been heavily sedated, standard procedure for the flight, but he is stable. Let’s see. The chart indicates that his name is….”

“Jackson!” Mike shouted and rushed to his side.

“Yes, his name is Jackson Page. I take it you know him?”

“Jackson, it’s Mike. Jackson, wake up.”

Doug gently pulled him back. “He’s asleep, Mike. Step back, please.”

“Here, buddy, have a seat.” Mike sat in a chair by the door and stared at his friend and former lover. My God, what happened? His face was bruised as if he had been in a fight. The rest of him was covered with a blanket and Mike was afraid to know what was underneath it. “What happened to him?”

Doug looked at Mike and thought it best that he not read the chart. “I have not had a chance to review the chart yet, Mike, but that can come later.” While Doug and Rusty did an initial assessment, Mike continued to stare at Jackson. He looked so old and so tired. Where had he been and why had he not returned my calls? It’s been over a week.

“Be right back, guys.” Doug excused himself to attend briefly to another patient, and Rusty stood at Jackson’s bed side.
